Commorating the Martyrs of 1989

On the cold, crisp morning of December 20th, 1989, a wave of discontent swept through Timisoara, a vibrant city in Romania’s western region. The air crackled with tension as whispers of rebellion echoed through the streets, a stark contrast to the oppressive silence that had long characterized Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist regime.

Amongst the throngs of protesters was Ana, a determined high school student whose spirit had been ignited by the growing movement for freedom. Ana had always harbored a deep-seated resentment towards the Ceaușescu regime’s stifling restrictions and the hardships it had brought upon her family and her community. The recent events in Timisoara, specifically the arrest of Hungarian pastor László Tőkés, had served as a tipping point, igniting a spark of resistance within her.

Ana’s heart pounded with a mix of trepidation and excitement as she found herself swept along in the throng. She watched in awe as the protests escalated, with protesters defying the authorities and taking to the streets, defying the regime’s iron grip. The sight of ordinary citizens, from young students to elderly grandmothers, standing up to the oppressive regime filled Ana with a surge of hope and determination.

As the day wore on, the protests intensified, with clashes between protesters and security forces becoming more frequent. Ana found herself caught in the middle of these volatile encounters, her heart pounding with fear as she witnessed the violence that erupted around her. Despite the danger, Ana refused to abandon the cause, her resolve strengthened by the unwavering determination of those around her.

As the sun set, the protests reached a fever pitch. Ceaușescu, seeking to quell the unrest, addressed a massive rally in Bucharest, attempting to placate the masses with empty promises. However, his words fell on deaf ears, as the protesters in Timisoara continued to defy his authority.

That night, Ana and her fellow protesters faced a terrifying ultimatum: join the army in suppressing the uprising or face severe punishment. Ana, her spirit unbroken, refused to bow to the regime’s demands. She knew that her future and the future of her country depended on the courage of those who dared to challenge the oppressive regime.

As the hours passed, the situation in Timisoara remained volatile. However, the tide was turning, as more and more people joined the ranks of the protesters, emboldened by the bravery of those who had taken the first steps. By dawn, the Securitate forces, demoralized and outnumbered, were forced to retreat, leaving the city in the hands of the protesters.

Ana, exhausted but triumphant, watched as the flag of democracy was raised above Timisoara. The city had been liberated, and the seeds of revolution had been sown across the country. Ana’s journey had been fraught with danger and uncertainty, but she had emerged stronger, her spirit forged in the fires of resistance. The events of December 20th, 1989, had forever changed her life, etching an indelible mark on her heart and soul. And as Romania embarked on its journey towards democracy, Ana knew that she had played a part in shaping the course of her nation’s future.

Let's agree to define productivity in terms of throughput. We can debate the meaning of productivity in terms of additional measurements of the business value of delivered work, but as Eliyahu Goldratt pointed out in his critique of the Balanced Scorecard, there is a virtue in simplicity. Throughput doesn’t answer all our questions about business value, but it is a sufficient metric for the context of evaluating the relationship of practices with productivity.
